Teen Choir's Story
Founded on Oct 6th 2012 with a humble beginning, Teen Choir started as a small ensemble of nine faithful, God-fearing, and determined group of teens. Although a very young choir, Teen Choir didn't take long before it began to flourish and establish itself as St. Alphonsa's choir of "hard-work, dedication, and spirituality." Within the first year, Teen Choir had already mastered both the Malayalam and English Qurbana- making it the first choir ever to do so. In an effort to keep traditions handed down by parents while still encouraging involvement of the youth, Teen Choir alternates between Malayalam and English Qurbana. It is also the first ever choir to keep a fine balance of musicianship through the use of select instrument tones, rhythms, and melodic ornamentations found in Indian Classical music (Carnatic & Hindustani) while also building a repertoire consisted of music requiring different levels of (Western) Classical part-singing/harmony and instrumentation. The strong faith and love of nine determined teens radiated at every Mass and soon the Teen Choir numbered over 25 members- including the largest instrumental ensemble in St. Alphonsa Church history. Through God's Grace, SACC Teen Choir continues to grow both musically and spiritually… "God is with us!" -Teen Choir (2014) motto.
Teen Choir Membership & Rehearsals
Teens interested in becoming a member (for voice or an instrument) should contact the Coordinators or one of the Choir directors to schedule a private audition. The audition is mandatory to determine a singer's vocal range or an instrumentalists skill level. Keep in mind that rehearsal attendance is essential for the choir's continued growth, and therefore, teens should only commit if they plan on consistent attendance and positive behavior. Mandatory practices are held from 5:00-8pm on the Saturday before Mass and as well as Sunday morning from 7:30-9:30am before the start of Mass. At the request of the teens- special events, fellowships, or additional rehearsals are often scheduled (weekly) on Saturday evenings from 5-8pm.
